Why Do We Care So Much About Jennifer Lopez Affleck’s Last Name?

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck finally got the whirlwind Las Vegas wedding they’ve always wanted. Arriving just before midnight, the pair tied the knot in a tearful Little White Chapel ceremony that was 20 years in the making. The bride wore two gowns over the course of the evening, one of which she’d been saving “for so many years.” The groom got ready in the men’s bathroom. And the next day Lopez broke the news with an announcement not-so-casually signed, “With love, Mrs. Jennifer Lynn Affleck.”

The revelation of Jennifer’s marital name change ignited a chain reaction of Twitter commentary. Some suggested it might’ve been more appropriate for Ben to take Jen’s last name. (Ben Lopez does sound nice.) Others criticized her for giving up such an essential marker of the multihyphenate’s Puerto Rican heritage. And then there’s the business side of things. Given to her in the ’90s by rapper Heavy D, J.Lo is more than a nickname—it’s her brand.
